چکیده

We analyse the performance of several clustering algorithms in the digital peerto-peer currency Bitcoin. Clustering in Bitcoin refers to the task of finding addresses that belongs to the same wallet as a given address. In order to assess the effectiveness of clustering strategies we exploit a vulnerability in the implementation of Connection Bloom Filtering to capture ground truth data about 37,585 Bitcoin wallets and the addresses they own. In addition to well-known clustering techniques, we introduce two new strategies, apply them on addresses of the collected wallets and evaluate precision and recall using the ground truth. Due to the nature of the Connection Bloom Filtering vulnerability the data we collect is not without errors. We present a method to correct the performance metrics in the presence of such inaccuracies. Our results demonstrate that even modern wallet software can not protect its users properly. Even with the most basic clustering technique known as multiinput heuristic, an adversary can guess on average 68.59% addresses of a victim. We show that this metric can be further improved by combining several more sophisticated heuristics.

Research on Anonymization and De-anonymization in the Bitcoin System

The Bitcoin system is an anonymous, decentralized crypto-currency. There are some deanonymizating techniques to cluster Bitcoin addresses and to map them to users’ identifications in the two research directions of Analysis of Transaction Chain (ATC) and Analysis of Bitcoin Protocol and Network (ABPN). Nowadays, there are also some anonymization methods such as coin-mixing and transaction remote...

Transaction Remote Release (TRR): A New Anonymization Technology for Bitcoin

The anonymity of the Bitcoin system has some shortcomings. Analysis of Transaction Chain (ATC) and Analysis of Bitcoin Protocol and Network (ABPN) are two important methods of deanonymizing bitcoin transactions. Nowadays, there are some anonymization methods to combat ATC but there has been little research into ways to counter ABPN. This paper proposes a new anonymization technology called Tran...

Obscuro: A Bitcoin Mixer using Trusted Execution Environments

Bitcoin provides only pseudo-anonymous transactions, which can be exploited to link payers and payees – defeating the goal of anonymous payments. To thwart such attacks, several Bitcoin mixers have been proposed, with the objective of providing unlinkability between payers and payees. However, existing Bitcoin mixers are not under widespread use, and can be regarded as either insecure or ineffi...

CoinShuffle: Practical Decentralized Coin Mixing for Bitcoin

The decentralized currency network Bitcoin is emerging as a potential new way of performing financial transactions across the globe. Its use of pseudonyms towards protecting users’ privacy has been an attractive feature to many of its adopters. Nevertheless, due to the inherent public nature of the Bitcoin transaction ledger, users’ privacy is severely restricted to linkable anonymity, and a fe...

Anonymous Alone? Measuring Bitcoin's Second-Generation Anonymization Techniques

This paper contributes a systematic account of transaction anonymization techniques that do not require trust in a single entity and support the existing cryptographic currency Bitcoin. It surveys and compares four known techniques, proposes tailored metrics to identify the use of each technique (but not necessarily its users), and presents longitudinal measurements indicating adoption trends a...
